The Co-operative Masterplan

Manchester City Council and The Co-operative Group are seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified architects and landscape consultants to design an area of public realm that will help to transform and regenerate a 20-acre site at the northern entrance to the city.

The Co-operative Group currently occupies a complex of seven buildings on the North-east edge of the city centre along Corporation Street and Miller Street. Manchester City Council recently backed a masterplan proposal for an ambitious redevelopment of the site that will begin with a new purpose built head office for the Group to be completed in summer 2012 to BREEAM ‘outstanding’ criteria.

The scope of the public realm work includes the design of open space throughout the masterplan site, including the
new head office; the road layout and potential transport links to the area; and the positioning of renewable utility
networks either within the site or near by. We want the area to enjoy an international reputation for having raised the
bar for environmentally sustainable commercial development that maximises the opportunity for creating exceptional public realm.
